The artistry of Becky Webb Guynn and Kathye J. Mendes comes alive in an exhibition of the cultural heritage of southwest Virginia in paintings depicting bluegrass musicians, local people and businesses, the New River and surrounding farm scenes. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Friday, April 25 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.
Everywhere you look there is a story to be told. From a painter's viewpoint, that story is told through the brush stroke. Capturing the activity and movement, the play of light and shadow on form is the challenge for these two artists.
Becky Webb Guynn of Woodlawn, Virginia, has a BFA from Longwood University in printmaking and graphic design. She has an avid interest in photography and draws upon that experience and her appreciation of small town life when she approaches a new subject. Her work could best be described as genre painting-a representation of life in this un-heroic form.
Becky has a real love for capturing the spirit of ordinary people as she would see them through her camera, creating both portrait and snapshot, a unique individual in their natural setting. She is also drawn to the historical landmarks and iconic imagery that make up the background of this life and strives to capture them with her camera and brush before they get away.
Mendes is a native of Northern California, but has lived in Grayson County, along with her husband, for 34 years. This is where she found her passion for a life in art. In the mid 1980's, she took a couple of art classes and never looked back. Art festivals were a way of life during all of the 1990's. For the last seven years, she works from her studio in Independence and paints an endless array of subject matter in acrylics and pastels.
The event is open to the public at no charge. The exhibit will hang until June 10. City Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. For more information, please call (276) 236-8338.
